Pin.FM

ChilliFresh is an app development company founded by Jon Atherton. Mercury Development had previously worked with Atherton on the hugely popular Wobble app. The companies once again teamed up for Pin.FM, a new, Amazon-cloud powered, social media app for the iPhone that allows users to view their content (photos, Tweets, check-ins, and so on) from social services like Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare in one aggregated chronological timeline and post voice comments to it. Mercury Development and ChilliFresh have since worked together on two more projects – jaja, the world's first pressure-sensitive stylus, and the AppTag Laser Blaster, which brings first-person shooter console gameplay to smartphones.

Review
Jon Atherton
ChilliFresh Founder

“I'm continually astounded by the work completed by Mercury Development. After I came up with the idea for Pin.fm, Mercury Development took it and ran, building something that far exceeded my expectations. No other custom software development company could create something this dynamic and engaging from the origins of a simple idea. I'm floored.“

The Challenge

After Mercury Development successfully worked with Atherton on Wobble, he approached the company about building an app that could capitalize on the exploding social networks. His idea was to build a diary-like, all-in-one solution for users to reflect back on shared content. The unique chronological timeline feature would be augmented by the addition of a comment recording function.

Mercury Development agreed to develop the application in collaboration with Atherton. Immediately, the company knew that the app's design was going to be a key factor in its success. The interface needed to be intuitive and user-friendly, and the ability to connect directly to the various social networks had to be seamless. Icon Factory was selected to help formulate the design because of its extensive experience in building artful and accessible interfaces. The result was an easy-to-navigate digital corkboard.

Mercury Development created the brilliant concept and UI prototype for the application, which was provided to Icon Factory for the design phase. For Mercury Development, the main focus was to create a UI that made it easy to navigate through large amounts of content from multiple social networks on one feed.

Mercury Development was instrumental in maintaining the scope of the project. Atherton initially wanted to include an extensive list of social media services. After discussions with the Mercury Development team, he realized the necessity of establishing a focus on the networks with the highest amounts of traffic. The app was, however, developed with the assumption that future versions would implement additional social streams. Mercury Development ensured that the app's architecture was flexible enough to quickly and efficiently add services in the future.

The Solution

Following three months of development, Mercury Development submitted the PIN.fm app to the App Store for approval.

With Pin.fm, iPhone users had an opportunity to take their social media experiences to a new level of engagement. Users of the app could fondly look back at their previous entries and add comments about the experience, making Pin.fm a one-of-a-kind solution. One of the most notable features of the app was the inclusion of the comments function.

Mercury Development spent a significant amount of time ensuring the app achieved optimal performance. In anticipation of Pin.fm having the potential for large numbers of users, Mercury Development made sure that the architecture was expandable so overall performance wasn't harmed. To achieve this goal, the company capitalized on Amazon cloud technologies to ensure that content loaded quickly and was always up-to-date.

Plans are already in place for future versions of the app to include other social services such as Flickr, Twitpic, Yfrog, and Instagram. All that's required is integration of a simple adapter, which will keep the cost of adding new services to a minimum. Mercury Development also plans to add an aggregated timeline for friend feeds.

The Result

Mercury Development took Atherton's concept and built an app that redefines the mobile social media landscape. Other apps had always been focused on looking forward in the social media timeline. Pin.fm is the first to engage users by looking back to create lasting memories. At the same time, the app's voice recording feature adds an element unmatched by other companies developing solutions in this space.
