A recent example: since the release of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), a lot of Digidesign Pro Tools developers have encountered difficulties with RTAS performance with their plug-ins under Leopard. Apple made significant changes to their thread-scheduling model in 10.5 and the developers who did not follow the multi-threaded programming practices tailored specifically for Pro Tools architecture were left with poorly performing plug-ins. Unfortunately, multi-threading design mistakes are impossible to address quickly, and a major rewrite of the code is usually required. For Quiet Art, Mercury developed a unique Pro Tools plug-in for automatic audio level control, WaveRider. Based on characteristics of the input audio, WaveRider automatically attenuates loud passages or amplifies low signals, bringing the audio track to production quality.
To make the results as realistic as possible, WaveRider imitates a musical editor's real-time physical movements of the fader on the control board instead of automatically adjusting the output signal gain. WaveRider physically moves the volume fader of the Pro Tools tracks, just as a professional musical editor would do. Complex, state-of-art algorithms for input signal analysis and automatic output level control, industry-standard protocols for communications between the plug-in and Pro Tools DAW, and support for key-chaining and direct processing make WaveRider a smart and easy-to-use tool allowing audio editors to take a little break.
